Macbeth Thesis proposals:

Example from All Quiet on the Western Front
Step 1: (ask questions) What can we learn from the characters?
Step 2: (determine a theme or idea) War is dehumanizing. - a theme
Step3: (state how the theme or idea is evident in the text) Through Paul’s experience behind the lines, at a Russian prisoner of war camp, and especially under bombardment in the trenches, Erich Maria Remarque realistically shows how war dehumanizes a man.

Directions: Develop a thesis proposal and post it in your TP wiki page below. Please 'show your work' by demonstrating all three steps. Remember to read through the ideas listed on the Macbeth Paper and Presentation wiki page for help (if you need it).

Your papers will be submitted to Turnitin.com, so you need to create your own thesis in your own words.

Macbeth Word Journals

Grading Sheet: Macbeth Word Journal Grading Sheet.pdf

Tracing a Word in Macbeth: Word Journals

Words that to focus on in Acts 2 and 3: blood, hand, night, and sleep.

Purpose: To identify how the meaning of a specific word is shaped by the situation in which it is used and the character who uses it. By concentrating on how the denotations and connotations of the words are related to the people who say them, you will come to conclusions about characters and ides in Macbeth based on key words and their contexts.

Starting at the beginning of the act you are assigned, find the word every time it appears. Use the “Text Search” application in Open Source Shakespeare . Each time you find the word, make an entry in your word journal.

Guidelines for Each Entry

Quotation, Speaker, and Citation
1. Write out the passage that contains your word and give act, scene, and line numbers. Record enough of the passage to make its meaning clear. Identify the speaker.

Paraphrase
2. Clarify the meaning of the passage by putting it into your own words - paraphrasing.

Clarification
3. Briefly explain (‘clarification’) what is happening in the play at the time the words in this passage are spoken.

Conclusions
4. Draw conclusions about how the word is used. For example, compare the passage to one you recorded earlier by explaining how the meaning of your word is affected by the character who uses it and the situation in which it is used.
Helpful questions when attempting to draw conclusions:
  • Does one character use the word most frequently? If so, why?
  • Does the word’s meaning change as different characters use it?
  • What is happening in the play at the time the word is spoken?
  • Is there any connection between these events and others that precede them?
  • What emotions does the speaker feel as he/she uses the word? Why does he/she feel as he/she does?

Final Conclusions
5. At the end of your act, use the journal to draw more conclusions (general conclusions): What character uses the word most often? How does the denotation and connotation of the word change from character to character? Is there an unusual use of the word? How does this word affect the act you studied?

Example Word Journal for "blood" in the first part of Act 1

Further Directions and Requirements:
  • Create your "Word Journal" in a Pages document. You will submit it to Turnitin.com.
  • You must have a minimum of TEN entries in your journal
  • Each entry must include Quotation, Speaker, and Citation; Paraphrase; Clarification; and Conclusions; See the example.
  • If you have a word that appears multiple times in one sentence, you may consider the multiple uses in one journal entry, or, if the word appears to be used differently within the sentence, you may write several journal entries on the multiple uses of the word in one sentence.
  • Include a "final conclusions" section at the end of your journal.

JasonK: Act 2 "blood"
SangWoo: Act 3 "blood"
SoYon: Act 2 "hand"

The Truth on Trial: Beowulf / Grendel Culminating Event

The Trial of Grendel Grading Sheet REVISED.pdf

Is the world and everything in it an unplanned accident? Is existence meaningless? Is the past irrelevant? Does anything matter? These are the questions with which Grendel struggles in John Gardner’s novel. Beowulf also addresses these key questions about human existence.

We are going to attempt to determine how these questions are answered in Beowulf and Grendel. We will use a trial format. The only evidence that is admissible in court are the two texts: Beowulf and Grendel. Here are the details:

The PURPOSE of the trial is to determine the following: What is the truth? Is the world and everything in it an unplanned accident? Is existence meaningless? Is the past irrelevant? Does anything matter? (the position of the Dragon and possibly Grendel)

Position 1:

It is your task to PROVE the following proposition: “The world and everything in it is unplanned accident, existence is meaningless; the past is irrelevant; nothing matters.” Use the arguments and experiences of Grendel and the Dragon. You will also want to use Beowulf.

Position 2:

It is your task to DISPROVE the following proposition: “The world and everything in it is unplanned accident, existence is meaningless; the past is irrelevant; nothing matters.” Use the arguments of Unferth, Beowulf, the Shaper, Ork, and any other evidence in the story. You will also want to use Beowulf. You are essentially arguing that: 1. The world is not an unplanned accident. 2. Existence is not meaningless. 3. The past (history) is important. 4. Everything (including personal behavior) does matter.

Statement Assignment:
Each person needs to prepare a 250 - 300 word statement with at least 3-4 pieces of textual support (word count excludes quotes). For the lawyers, argue for your position, attempting not to simply repeat what the other lawyers are saying. For the witnesses, write your statement from the POV of your character, explaining what you believe to be the truth.

Write your statement in the wiki page link below, and make sure your cite direct quotations and paraphrases. Also, please write your name at the top of your wiki page.

Take some time in your group to discuss your ideas, making sure you distribute the best arguments and textual evidence. Don't let one "Dragon" have all the good quotes.
